Portrait Firenze: Florence's Most Personal Luxury

The Location

Lungarno Acciaiuoli, directly on the river, a hundred metres from the Ponte Vecchio. The position is exceptional: you can walk to the Uffizi in ten minutes, to Santa Croce in fifteen, to the Oltrarno in five minutes across the bridge. The view from the river-facing rooms — the Ponte Vecchio lit at night, its shops' lights reflected in the Arno — is one of Florence's great experiences.

The Hotel

The Portrait Firenze is managed by the Ferragamo family (owners of Luisa Via Roma), and the sensibility is immediately apparent: contemporary design in a historic building, edited with genuine taste rather than luxury-hotel formula. The public spaces feel like rooms in an exceptionally well-appointed private house.

The Suite

We stayed in a one-bedroom Arno View Suite. The sitting room faced the river through floor-to-ceiling windows; the bedroom sat behind it, quieter, with proper blackout curtains. The kitchen was stocked with prosecco, local olive oil, fresh fruit. The bathroom was all Carrera marble, with a Victoria + Albert soaking tub and a separate rain shower. Kimbo coffee machine. Bottega Veneta amenities.

Dining

The hotel does not have a restaurant in the traditional sense — there is a bar and terrace where breakfast and light meals are served. Breakfast was among the finest I have had in Italy: fresh pastries from a nearby pasticceria, Florentine schiacciata, excellent coffee, and a selection of local salumi and cheeses. The concierge manages restaurant reservations with evident connections — we ate at Enoteca Pinchiorri (three Michelin stars) the following evening.

Service

With only 37 suites, the staff ratio is extraordinary. Our suite manager appeared at the right moments and was invisible the rest of the time. A note expressing curiosity about the Vasari Corridor resulted, the following morning, in a private tour arranged. This is what genuine service looks like.

Verdict

Portrait Firenze is a small, expensive, deeply serious hotel that does not waste your time. Everything has been thought through and executed to the highest standard. If I am returning to Florence, I am staying here.
