Le Sirenuse, Positano: The Jewel of the Amalfi Coast
Perched above the cerulean waters of Positano, Le Sirenuse delivers a masterclass in Italian luxury. A stay here is not merely accommodation — it is the Amalfi Coast distilled into its purest form.
First Impressions
The taxi drops you at a narrow lane on Via Cristoforo Colombo, and then the hotel appears — a salmon-pink villa clinging to the cliff face, its terraced gardens cascading towards the sea. The 1950s furnishings, the hand-painted Vietri ceramics, the scent of lemon and jasmine in the air: within five minutes, you understand why this place has been in the Sersale family since 1951.
The Room
We stayed in a Superior Double with sea view, which turns out to be an understatement of significant proportions. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors opened to a private terrace where breakfast arrived each morning — pastries from the hotel kitchen, freshly squeezed blood orange juice, espresso in proper Italian cups. The bathroom was enormous, all white marble and brass fittings, stocked with Acqua di Parma products.
La Sponda Restaurant
Dinner at La Sponda is one of those experiences you spend years trying to recreate. The terrace is lit entirely by candles — hundreds of them, in terracotta pots along every ledge and railing — and the menu is a love letter to Campanian cuisine. We had linguine alle vongole that tasted of pure sea, followed by branzino al forno with olives and capers. The wine list is exceptional, and the sommelier steered us towards a Fiano di Avellino that was revelatory.
The Pool and Spa
The infinity pool is where most mornings dissolve. Tiled in blue and white, it overlooks the entire bay of Positano, with the village stacked up the hillside behind you. Sun loungers are padded and plentiful — unusually, we never scrambled for one. The spa occupies the lower floors and offers treatments using locally sourced ingredients: limoncello wraps, volcanic mud from the Phlegraean Fields, olive oil massages.
Service
The service at Le Sirenuse is the sort that anticipates needs before they arise. Our preferred table appeared each morning without request. When we mentioned a birthday in passing at check-in, a small cake and a bottle of Champagne appeared in the room that evening. Nothing feels performative; everything feels genuine.
Verdict
There are hotels that are beautiful, and then there are hotels that make you feel as though life outside them is slightly less real. Le Sirenuse is firmly in the second category. It is expensive — genuinely, properly expensive — but it earns every euro.
