COMO Uma Ubud: Jungle Serenity Done Right

Arrival

The drive from the airport takes roughly two hours through rice paddies and temple towns. The hotel appears at the end of a private road, all dark timber and volcanic stone, the jungle so close you can hear it breathing. Check-in is unhurried — cold towels, welcome drinks, a brief orientation that manages to be informative without feeling like a sales pitch.

The Rooms

We stayed in a Uma Pool Suite, which occupies its own private pavilion set into the hillside. The plunge pool looks out over the tree canopy; on clear mornings, there is a view of Gunung Batur in the distance. The room itself is generous — a king bed with a Balinese carved headboard, an open-air bathroom with a stone soaking tub, traditional ikat textiles throughout.

COMO Shambhala Cuisine

Dining at COMO Uma Ubud follows the group's characteristic approach: clean, ingredient-led food with an emphasis on local produce and wellbeing without self-righteousness. Breakfast is an elaborate affair — house-made granola, tropical fruit, nasi goreng that is worth getting up for. Dinner leans towards shared plates of Indonesian and pan-Asian dishes; the slow-cooked Balinese bebek (duck) is a reliable highlight.

The Spa

COMO Shambhala's spa is one of the finest in Bali — which is saying something in a place that has elevated the spa experience into an art form. The Bespoke Journey treatment (three hours, personalised to you) combines traditional Balinese massage, reflexology, and a herbal steam. We emerged dazed in the most pleasant possible way.

Activities

The hotel coordinates yoga sessions in a pavilion above the ravine, guided rice-paddy walks to nearby villages, and cooking classes. The excursions feel genuinely curated rather than ticked off a tourist checklist. We spent an afternoon with a local guide visiting a traditional wood-carver's workshop in Mas — something we would never have found independently.

Verdict

COMO Uma Ubud is not cheap, but it delivers on its promise of authentic Balinese luxury. The jungle setting, the food, and the spa are all exceptional. If you are dividing time between Ubud and the coast, base yourself here for the cultural half.
