The Building

The Convento de Santa Clara was established in 1621 by Clarissa nuns, who built what was then the largest convent in the New World. The vaulted corridors, the courtyard with its stone fountain, the chapel now converted into the principal bar — the bones of the original building remain intact and govern the hotel's atmosphere entirely.

The Room

We stayed in a Colonial wing room, which offered original stone walls, terracotta floors, and a ceiling so high the air stayed cool even in the Caribbean heat. The Sofitel design language — French refinement applied lightly — complements the architecture without competing with it. The bathroom was generous, the air conditioning heroically powerful.

The Courtyard and Pool

The central courtyard, shaded by enormous ceiba trees, is where life in the hotel happens. Breakfast is served here, cocktails appear in the evenings, and the stone pool — long and cool and seemingly ancient — is the perfect antidote to Cartagena's equatorial sun. Everything about the space is unhurried and civilised.

1621 Restaurant

The hotel's restaurant, named for the convent's founding year, is one of the better tables in Cartagena. The cooking draws on Caribbean Colombian tradition — fresh seafood, plantain in various preparations, ceviches that cut through the heat with citrus and chilli. The mojito, made with local aguardiente rather than rum, is a small revelation.

Service

Sofitel Legend properties carry a reputation for service that is more genuine than the corporate standard, and Santa Clara upholds it. The concierge arranged a private walking tour of the walled city at dawn — before the tour groups arrive — which turned out to be one of the finest hours of the trip.

Verdict

Cartagena is a city with no shortage of boutique hotels, but the Santa Clara is operating on a different register. The history embedded in the building, the courtyard atmosphere, and the quality of the restoration make it exceptional.
