Gili Lankanfushi: No Shoes, No News, Pure Maldives

The Concept

Gili Lankanfushi's guiding principle is simplicity. There are no shoes required (or wanted) anywhere on the resort. There are no newspapers and no televisions. The overwater villas are built from reclaimed timber and natural materials. The menu is shaped by what can be sourced locally and sustainably. None of this is self-righteous; all of it is completely correct.

Getting There

The resort is 30 minutes by speedboat from Malé airport. The boat crossing — through waters so clear the coral is visible from above — is an introduction to the Maldivian palette: every shade of blue and turquoise the spectrum accommodates, plus white sand and a sky that operates at maximum saturation.

The Villa

We stayed in a Crusoe Residence — a free-standing overwater villa that extends 350 metres out to sea via a private jetty. The main structure is circular, built from responsibly sourced tropical timber, with a massive daybed on the deck, a hammock over the water, an outdoor shower, and a glass panel in the floor of the bedroom through which you watch the reef fish below. There is a separate guest villa for staff or friends. It is, objectively, too much.

The Water

The house reef at Gili is one of the finest in the Maldives. We snorkelled directly from the villa jetty and saw reef sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, and a density of fish life that made it feel implausible. The dive school is excellent and caters to all levels. The resort has a resident marine biologist who gives nightly talks on the reef ecosystem.

Food and Drink

Dining at Gili is consistently excellent and the ecological commitment carries into the kitchen: the Muraka restaurant prioritises locally caught sustainable fish and Maldivian ingredients. The grilled wahoo with coconut curry was the best fish dish I have eaten in years. Evening cocktails on the main deck as the sun descends into the Indian Ocean are not negotiable.

Verdict

Gili Lankanfushi is the rare resort that backs its ecological claims with genuine action — and manages to be one of the most beautiful places in the Indian Ocean at the same time. The combination of natural setting, villa design, and food quality is unmatched in the Maldives.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, marine enthusiasts, anyone who needs to actually stop Room rate: From £1,500 per night (Crusoe Residences) Tip: Stay minimum five nights. Three days is not enough to decompress to the point where Gili works its full effect.
