Explora Patagonia: The Finest Wilderness Lodge on Earth

Explora Patagonia sits at the edge of Torres del Paine National Park, designed by the Chilean architect Germán del Sol to make the landscape the total experience. It is, without reservation, the finest wilderness lodge I have visited.

Explora Patagonia: The Finest Wilderness Lodge on Earth

The Concept

Explora is not a hotel with activities. It is, in its own framing, a "hotel for exploration" — the entire structure, programme, and ethos is organised around getting guests into the landscape. All-inclusive packages include all meals, all drinks, and all guided excursions. You arrive, hand over your agenda, and the landscape takes over.

The Building

Germán del Sol designed the lodge in 1993 with the Torres del Paine massif as its constant backdrop. The structure follows the contour of the land — low, horizontal, clad in native wood — and seems almost to grow from it. The views from every window include either the towers, the lake, the glacier, or all three simultaneously. There are no televisions in any room. There is nothing to do except look outside.

The Excursions

Explora employs fourteen guides for a maximum of fifty guests. The programme runs from gentle valley walks to technical approaches to the base of the Torres. Every excursion is capped at eight guests; most are smaller. Our guide, Cristián, had been leading in the park for nine years and possessed that rare ability to make landscape legible — explaining geology, plant succession, and bird behaviour in a way that recast everything we were seeing.

The W Trek to the Mirador Las Torres took seven hours and was among the finest days I have spent outdoors anywhere. The combination of glacial lake, primary forest, rocky scramble, and the sheer vertical wall of granite at the end — all of it guided by someone who understood it completely — was extraordinary.

The Food

Frankly better than it needs to be. The kitchen uses Patagonian lamb, king crab from the channels, locally grown produce. The wine list focuses on Chilean and Argentine bottles with specific expertise. After eight hours in wind and cold, arriving to that dining room and those meals was pure pleasure.

The Pools

Hot indoor and outdoor pools, a massage room, a wood-fired sauna — all designed to make physical recovery from the day's exertion feel luxurious rather than functional.

Verdict

Explora earns the superlatives it consistently receives. The combination of extraordinary natural setting, exceptional guiding, and thoughtful comfort is not replicated anywhere I know of.

Best for: Serious hikers, nature lovers, anyone who wants landscape as total experience Room rate: From £600 per night all-inclusive Tip: Book the full W Trek day as early in the stay as possible, before weather changes.
