Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai: A Kingdom Unto Itself

The Concept

Dhara Dhevi was conceived as an evocation of the ancient Lanna capital at its 14th-century peak. The architecture — 30 separate villas and residences, plus a Colonial wing — is built to period, using traditional techniques and local craftspeople. The scale is extraordinary: you need a bicycle or golf cart to navigate the grounds.

The Villa

We stayed in a Colonial wing room (the full villas were outside our budget), which was nevertheless enormous — 90 square metres, with a private terrace overlooking a lotus pond. The four-poster bed was draped in silk, the bathroom had a freestanding tub and rain shower, and the minibar came with local herbal teas and northern Thai snacks.

The Dheva Spa

The spa complex is the size of a small village. It occupies a walled compound with its own lily ponds, traditional salas, and a hydrotherapy area with plunge pools, steam rooms, and a swim-against current pool. We booked the Royal Lanna Ritual — two hours of scrub, massage, and facial — and barely spoke for the rest of the day.

Restaurants

There are four restaurants on the property. The main restaurant, serving Northern Thai and international cuisine, is excellent. The Colonial bar, with its dark timber and rattan furniture, serves the best gin and tonic in Chiang Mai. We ate dinner in the village market area one evening — long-table banquet style, traditional dancers, an entirely theatrical experience that was nevertheless deeply enjoyable.

The Grounds

The 60-acre estate is the hotel's greatest luxury in a city where land is cheap but space is increasingly scarce. Working rice paddies adjoin the grounds — guests can participate in planting or harvest, depending on season. The orchards supply the kitchen. The grounds themselves, at dawn or dusk, are extraordinary.

Verdict

Dhara Dhevi is unlike anything else in Southeast Asia. It could easily tip into theme-park excess but is saved by the quality of the craftsmanship and the genuine scale of the undertaking. If you are visiting Chiang Mai for more than two nights, this is the destination.
