Trekking Torres del Paine: The W Circuit Explained
The W Circuit in Torres del Paine National Park is one of the world's great multi-day treks — 70km through Patagonian wilderness of glaciers, granite towers, emerald lakes and condors.
The Route
The W Circuit takes its name from the route shape on a map. Starting from the east (Puerto Natales side), you trek to the Mirador Las Torres (the base of the granite tower formation), back to the central valley, west to the Valle del Francés, and finally to the Grey Glacier on the far west. Distance varies 70-80km depending on starting point; typical completion time is 4-5 days.
Refugios vs. Camping
You can sleep in refugios (mountain huts with bunk beds, hot showers and full dinner) or camp. Refugios cost around €60-80 per person per night with dinner and breakfast; camping is €15-25. The EcoCamp and Las Torres Patagonia offer more comfortable lodge-based options.
Booking
All accommodation in the park must be booked months in advance — sometimes a year ahead for peak season (December-February). Book through the Vertice Patagonia or Las Torres websites directly.
When to Go
November and March are the sweet spots: fewer people than the Christmas peak, more reliable weather than April. January and February are the most popular months with the least reliable wind conditions — Patagonian wind is not metaphorical.
Getting There
From Punta Arenas (3-4 hour bus) or Puerto Natales (2.5 hours). Most people fly into Punta Arenas via Santiago with LATAM.
What to Pack
Waterproof everything. Poles. Layers. Wind is the primary challenge; temperatures are moderate year-round.
