Walking the Path of the Gods: The Amalfi Coast's Most Dramatic Hike

The Route

The standard walk runs from Bomerano (above Agerola) to Nocelle above Positano. The distance is around 12km with roughly 500m of descent. Allow 4-5 hours including rest stops. The path is well-marked in yellow and most of it is rocky mountain trail — proper walking shoes or boots are strongly recommended.

Getting There and Back

From Amalfi town, take the SITA bus to Agerola-Bomerano (roughly 90 minutes, infrequent service — check the schedule). The bus from Nocelle down to Positano connects with the ferry network along the coast. Book the return journey from Positano in advance in high season.

What to Expect

The first section from Bomerano climbs through terraced lemon groves before the trail opens onto the clifftops. The views — straight down to the sea, across to Capri, east along the coast to Amalfi — are consistently extraordinary. The path narrows in places and requires some scrambling over rocks.

Best Time to Walk

May, June and September are ideal — warm enough for swimming at the end, cool enough for comfortable hiking. July and August are very hot; the path is exposed and water sources are scarce. Take at least 2 litres of water per person.

After the Walk

Positano at the end is a deserved reward. The beach is pebbly but the water is clear, the restaurants overlooking the sea are well-priced for the location, and the ferry back to Amalfi takes 20 minutes.
