Getting There
Fly into Wattay International (VTE) in Vientiane, then take a domestic flight or the Laos-China Railway to Luang Prabang. The new railway takes under 2 hours. Alternatively, the slow boat from the Thai border (Chiang Khong) down the Mekong takes two days and is one of the great river journeys in Southeast Asia.
The Alms Giving Ceremony
At dawn every morning, dozens of saffron-robed monks walk in silence through the streets of Luang Prabang to receive alms (rice and food) from local residents. This is not a performance — it is the living spiritual practice of the city. Observe from a respectful distance, do not use flash, and do not buy rice to give unless instructed by a local resident. The ceremony takes place along Sakkaline Road beginning at approximately 5:30am.
The Temples
Wat Xieng Thong is the finest temple in Laos — a magnificent structure built in 1560 with gilded facades and a mosaic depicting the Tree of Life. Wat Visoun has the oldest surviving stupa in Luang Prabang (1503). The temples are at their most beautiful at dawn and dusk when the monks return and the light is low.
The Night Market
The Hmong Night Market on Sisavangvong Road is one of the best night markets in Southeast Asia — textiles, lacquerware, silver jewellery, and food stalls, with significantly less of the tourist tat that dominates equivalent markets elsewhere. Buy the silk. It's exceptional and the prices reflect real production costs.
Kuang Si Waterfall
Twenty-nine kilometres south of the city — tiered turquoise pools in the jungle, with a bear rescue sanctuary at the base. Take a tuk-tuk (negotiate before departing) or hire a bicycle if you want the slower journey. Swim in the lower pools in the morning before the tour buses arrive.
When to Go
November to February — dry season, comfortable temperatures, and the best river levels. March to May is hot and hazy from agricultural burning. June to October is monsoon season, which makes the countryside green and the waterfalls more dramatic at the cost of some rain.
