Choosing Your Maldives Resort: What the Brochure Doesn't Tell You

The Atoll System

The Maldives comprises 26 atolls scattered across 900km of the Indian Ocean. The resort you choose determines your entire experience — you effectively live on a private island with your fellow guests for the duration. Research matters.

Budget Brackets

Ultra-luxury (over £700/night): Gili Lankanfushi, Soneva Fushi, Cheval Blanc Randheli. Enormous water villas, multiple restaurants, exceptional snorkelling house reef.

Luxury (£350-700/night): Constance Halaveli, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, COMO Maalifushi. Excellent quality, slightly more modest villa sizes.

Mid-range (£150-350/night): Kanuhura, Holiday Inn Kandooma. Good-quality experience without the ultra-luxury price.

Guesthouses (from £60/night): Staying in local island villages (Maafushi, Dhigurah) offers a completely different experience — Maldivian life rather than resort bubble, excellent diving, very good value.

What Actually Matters

House reef quality: A resort with a good house reef (snorkelling directly from the beach) is worth a premium. Ask specifically about reef health and distance.

Transfer time: North Malé and South Malé atolls are seaplane-free — speedboat transfers from 30-90 minutes. Further atolls require seaplane (spectacular but adds cost and restricts arrival times).

All-inclusive vs. à la carte: Most resorts are à la carte. Food and drink can exceed accommodation costs — factor this in.
