We started from the coast where the temperature hovered around a pleasant 22°C. The roads were in good condition but wonderfully twisty as we climbed higher into the midlands. We drove through both Arico el Nuevo and Arico el Viejo. The newer village felt like a typical Canarian town — functional, lived-in, and perfectly pleasant but without that special historic magic. The real treasure is the old settlement.

Arico Viejo is beautifully preserved and feels delightfully traditional and unspoiled. Narrow streets lined with classic white-washed Canarian houses, stone details, and wooden balconies transport you to another era. The whole place has a peaceful, photogenic charm that makes you want to linger and snap photos around every corner.

We particularly loved the glimpses of cave houses carved into the surrounding hillsides — a fascinating reminder of traditional island living that blends so naturally with the landscape.

The focal point is the charming main square and its church. Sadly the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista was closed when we visited, but the informative board outside provided a great potted history of the area and the building itself. One thing to note: there are no cafés, shops, or facilities right in the old square. It's wonderfully authentic but bring water and any snacks you might need. The quiet adds to the peaceful feel — you really do have the place mostly to yourself.
