Barcelona's Hidden Tapas Bars: Beyond the Tourist Trail

The Approach

Barcelonans eat late. Lunch is 2-4pm; dinner rarely starts before 9pm. The best tapas bars don't take reservations. Arrive at opening time (usually 7pm or 8pm for dinner service) or expect to wait.

El Born

The El Born neighbourhood is Barcelona's most gastronomically interesting. Bar del Pla on Carrer de la Montcada does exceptional croquetes de pernil and ensaladilla russa in a no-fuss tiled room. El Xampanyet next door is famous for its house cava, served cold and slightly sweet — perfect with anything.

Barceloneta and the Sea

La Cova Fumada in Barceloneta is credited with inventing the bombas (meat and potato croquette) in the 1940s. It is cash only, no English spoken, and opens only until early afternoon. Worth every complication.

Gràcia

The Gràcia neighbourhood has the most authentic neighbourhood feeling. La Pepita on Carrer de Còrsega does creative pintxos with excellent vermouth. Bar Calders on Carrer del Parlament is a neighbourhood institution for weekend vermouth sessions.

What to Order

The canonical Barcelona tapas: pan amb tomàquet (bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil), croquetes (anything, but jamón or bacallà), patatas bravas with proper alioli, boquerones al vinagre (white anchovies in vinegar), and gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns) when they're local.
