Amsterdam by Bike: Cycling the Canals and Beyond

Getting a Bike

Rental options are everywhere. MacBike has multiple central locations and is reliable. Star Bikes Rental near Central Station is cheaper. Expect to pay €10-15 per day; always take the lock seriously (Amsterdam bike theft is a major issue).

The Canal Ring

The UNESCO-listed canal ring — Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht — is the obvious cycling route and deservedly so. The light is best in late afternoon when it catches the gabled facades. The Jordaan neighbourhood, west of the ring, has narrower lanes and less traffic — excellent for exploring slowly.

Beyond the Centre

Cycle 5km east along the IJ waterfront to Amsterdam Noord (take the free ferry from Central Station) and you're in the city's most creative quarter — NDSM Wharf hosts markets and studios in converted industrial buildings. North Amsterdam is flat, fast and a genuine alternative to the tourist centre.

Vondelpark is the obvious cycling destination for a morning loop, though the park rules technically require you to walk your bike through some sections. Nobody does.

Practical Notes

Dutch cycling infrastructure is exceptional but cycling culture has its own unspoken rules. Signal your turns (arm gestures, not bells). Keep right unless overtaking. Do not stop on cycle paths to check your phone. Tram tracks are a hazard — cross them at an angle, not parallel.
